Dr Dee
From 25 June to 7 July 2012, London Coliseum

Inspired by the mystical world of John Dee – the 16th-century mathematician, astrologer, courtier and spy – this new opera recounts the Faustian tragedy of a soaring intellect brought down by a counterfeit Mephistopheles.

Part meditation on the idea of Englishness, part lament for a lost spirituality, Dr Dee takes the form of a modern Elizabethan masque, featuring an alchemical mix of classical and pop vocals with contemporary orchestral music and 16th-century period instruments. Damon Albarn himself will also perform live as the troubadour-narrator.

A breathtaking series of visually stunning tableaux spanning five centuries of English history and the three realms of earth, heaven and hell, Doctor Dee is directed by the multi-award-winning Rufus Norris with his usual virtuosic flare.

Running time: 2hrs

Zenaida Yanowsky as Odette/Odile and Nehemiah Kish as Prince Siegfried

07/02/11 - RETURN TO SHEER GRACE AND POISE IN SWAN LAKE

With Darren Aronofsky's film Black Swan annoying dance fans with its so-so dance scenes, it's a relief to see a real Swan Lake in all its theatrical and choreographic unity. Having Zenaida Yanowsky in the ballet is also a considerable plus. The senior Royal Ballet dancer has been less seen in recent years, having been away having children, but her performance in the twin Swan Lake lead roles of Odette-Odile proved her absence hasn't stalled her artistry.

If anything, her time out has brought a greater range and depth to her dancing and acting. Her Odile, the dark-hearted black swan who deceives the Prince, was especially assured. It's easy to turn the character, and the dancing, into a come-hither vamp who dupes the prince with her blatant sexual availability. The prince, like most men, may be vulnerable to this tactic but he is no fool - and very much in love with the white swan, Odette. Yanowsky's approach is to reel him in with a combination of curve and poise, her back and neck in arching hints of sexual pleasure while her composure combined with a contrived restraint leaves the confused prince especially vulnerable.

Running until April 8th at Royal Opera House. See tickets.
